Common questions about PAT testing

We understand that some businesses may be unsure what PAT testing involves. Below are some of the most common questions we’re asked.

North Cambs PAT Testing FAQs

What is PAT testing?

PAT testing is the inspection and testing of electrical equipment to help ensure it remains safe to use while in service.

Although the term stands for Portable Appliance Testing, modern in-service inspection and testing can also include certain spur-connected or fixed equipment where appropriate.

The process combines visual inspection with electrical testing to identify faults, damage, or wear that could create safety risks.

There is no specific law stating that PAT testing itself must be carried out at fixed intervals. However, businesses do have legal responsibilities to ensure electrical equipment used in the workplace is maintained in a safe condition.

PAT testing is one recognised way of demonstrating that reasonable steps are being taken to support electrical safety.

Do small businesses need PAT testing?

Yes, small businesses still have responsibilities to maintain electrical equipment safely.

Even a small office or workshop may contain multiple items that should be periodically inspected and tested.

What kinds of equipment need testing?

This depends on the type of equipment and how it is used.

Commonly tested items include:

  • office equipment
  • extension leads
  • kettles and kitchen appliances
  • power tools
  • chargers
  • portable heaters
  • music equipment
  • cleaning equipment

In some environments, spur-connected equipment such as lamps, wall heaters, or hand dryers may also be included as part of an inspection and testing programme.

Will PAT testing disrupt our business?

We aim to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

Testing is organised efficiently and can often be carried out around your normal working day. We work with many industries including: offices, landlords, workshops, factories, hospitality venues, gyms, and live performance environments where keeping operations running smoothly is important.

How often should PAT testing be carried out?

There is no single rule for every business.

Testing frequency depends on:

  • the type of equipment
  • how often it is used
  • the environment it operates in
  • the likelihood of damage or wear

For example, construction site tools may require more frequent inspection than low-risk office equipment.

We can help advise on a sensible testing schedule for your environment.

Will I still receive certification if some items fail?

Yes.

PAT testing certificates and reports reflect the inspection and testing process as a whole, including any items that may have failed during testing.

If faulty equipment is identified, it is recorded so that it can be repaired, removed from service, or replaced where appropriate. Common items such as damaged extension leads or faulty kettles are often quickly replaced once identified.

The purpose of PAT testing is to identify unsafe equipment and ensure appropriate action is taken. Discovering and dealing with faulty items is part of maintaining a safe working environment, and does not prevent certification from being issued for the equipment that has been properly tested.

Do you test 110v equipment?

Yes.

We test 110V equipment as part of our service, including tools and equipment commonly used on construction sites and industrial environments.

This includes 110V portable appliances as well as higher-current site equipment such as 32A and 64A tools, leads, and distribution cables. All testing is carried out using appropriate inspection and test procedures to ensure equipment is safe for continued use on site.

Do you test caravan hook-up and blue industrial adapters?

Yes.

We test blue industrial “caravan hook-up” style connectors as part of our service. These are typically 230–240V site and leisure power connections and are commonly rated at 16A or 32A depending on the equipment type.

We carry out full inspection and PAT testing on these adapters, leads, and associated equipment to ensure they are safe for continued use in caravans, mobile units, events, and site-based installations.

What do we receive after testing?

You will receive clear records of the equipment tested, including PAT test certification for your compliance records.

Tested equipment is also labelled to show inspection status and test dates where appropriate.

Can you test equipment outside normal office hours?

In many cases, yes.

We understand some businesses need testing arranged around staff, tenants, production schedules, or events. Where possible, we can arrange flexible appointments to minimise disruption.

Does everything need testing?

Not necessarily.

Inspection and testing requirements depend on:

  • the type of equipment
  • how frequently it is used
  • the environment it operates in
  • the likelihood of damage or wear

Some equipment may only require periodic visual inspection, while higher-risk equipment may benefit from more regular formal testing.

The aim is not to test unnecessarily, but to ensure electrical equipment is appropriately maintained and safe for continued use.

Why electrical equipment PAT testing matters

Regular inspection and testing helps businesses reduce electrical risks and demonstrate a responsible approach to workplace safety.

It can also help:

  • identify damaged equipment early
  • support health and safety responsibilities
  • maintain organised compliance records
  • reassure employees and customers
  • demonstrate a commitment to workplace wellbeing

For many businesses, it is also an important part of showing staff that electrical safety is taken seriously and that equipment used every day is properly maintained. See our Services page for more information
